Jean Moderates a webinar on Innovative Approaches to Palliative Care in Africa

The Irish Global Health Network and the African Palliative Care Association recently hosted an inspiring webinar exploring innovative solutions to palliative care across Africa.

Moderated by dying well advocate Jean Callanan, the event featured insightful contributions from leaders making a difference:

Dr. Trish Scanlan, Founder of Tumaini La Maisha in Uganda, shared how her team is overcoming challenges in providing palliative care to children across Tanzania by building a nationwide network of partner hospitals.

Mark Bikosa Mwesiga, Executive Director of the Palliative Care Association of Uganda, highlighted an innovative fundraising effort where Irish volunteers drove 11 ambulances from Mombasa to Kampala, raising funds and increasing awareness about palliative care needs.

Lacey Ahern, CEO of Global Partners in Care, introduced a global initiative aimed at reducing fear and misconceptions about palliative care. This initiative, tested in Africa and Latin America, promotes the message of “reducing avoidable suffering” through creative communication campaigns.

Sr. Jane Francis Nakafeero, CEO of St. Francis Hospital Naggalma, discussed a pilot project providing palliative care for elderly African sisters, aiming to improve the wellbeing of thousands and positively impact faith-based and community health services.

Together, these efforts highlight how collaboration and innovation are transforming palliative care across the continent.
