Advocate for dying well

JEAN CALLANAN

As an advocate for dying well, Jean believes passionately that, wherever in the world they are, people should be provided with the care and support that they need at life’s end. Her mission is to spark honest, life-affirming conversations about death, dying and personal intentions that allow people to experience dignity and comfort at the end of life.

With five years as Chair of Irish Hospice Foundation, alongside 20+ years of strategic leadership in international business, Jean champions palliative care globally, with a particular focus on projects aiming to improve palliative care access in Africa.

Why talking about death matters

Why talking about
death matters

It’s understandable to think that we are sparing our loved ones and ourselves from pain by not discussing death ahead of time. But in fact, it is an act of love to think about what we would like to happen at the end of our lives - and sharing helps ease the burden for our family and friends.

Advocating for Africa

At the Irish Embassy in Kampala with Kevin Colgan - Irish Ambassador, Dr Emmanuel Luyirika - Executive Director African Palliative Care Association, and Dr Eve Namisango - Programmes, Research and Development Manager

According to the WHO, only about 14% of people who need palliative care currently receive it. This means that nearly 90% of the world is suffering unnecessarily - and access to care is particularly limited in Africa.

When so many of us want similar, simple, human things at life’s end, it’s very unjust that basic access to comfort and relief from pain remains out of reach for so many.  We have the means to change this and we need to do so!
